Becoming a Firewise Community is a simple process that can enable communities to organize and build wildfire resiliency in their community. Explore the steps below for more information. If you're interested in becoming FIREWISE, please contact jojo@smmsfc.org for support. If you are already an active site, reach out for assistance with fuel reduction, education, and more!

Organize your team
Form a team of 3 to 5 community leaders and designate a point of contact. Ensure you have 8+ homes interested in participating.
Develop a 3-year Action Plan that outlines annual objectives along with measurable results, that the outcome levels advance each year.
All communities leaders should view the
"Intro to Firewise" video! Learn more about the history, process, and benefits.
Work with our team to finalize your application. Then, get approved! Estimated approval time: 2- 4 weeks
Assess wildfire risk
Schedule a Firewise USA Community Risk Assessment with our team. Email jojo@smmfsc.org for scheduling.
Annual Requirements
Host an annual community outreach event and complete 1 hour of fuel reduction work per household annually (examples here).
