Community Workday

During the Community Workday, neighbors help neighbors create an ember resistant zone and learn how to install 1/16in mesh screens on vents. SMMFSC works with resident leaders to coordinate the block-party style workday. Must be within a FIREWISE Community to be eligible.

Community Workday Goals

The workday will focus on Veg and Vents. What do we mean by this? The science shows that creating an ember resistant zone as a 5ft buffer around the house is the most important part of defensible space. For our community work day we will be helping each other reduce the amount of vegetation in zone zero (0-5ft) around participating households. This includes; trimming low branches of trees in zone zero, removal of shrubs or small plants in zone zero, removal of mulch or leaf litter in zone zero.

To be most effective, defensible space must be done in conjunction with wildfire home hardening retrofits.  This includes maintenance and upgrades which can reduce the likelihood of embers entering or igniting a house. The most common recommendation is to retrofit vent screens. We will have an option to bulk purchase 1/16in screening for households who opt in– to either DIY install or hire a contractor to install.
